Government plans to develop Varanasi as the freight hub of Purvanchal

The Ministry of Shipping, along with the Indian Inland Waterways Authority, has decided to develop a Freight Corridor on the inland waterways on Ganga river in Varanasi by an investment of 156 crores.

With its development, the government wants to promote the development of commercial "logistics" system in Varanasi.

Those reserved places where diversified traffic system, luggage distribution system and logistics work together in an integrated fashion, is called "Freight Corridor".

In one of its studies, the World Bank categorized Varanasi as a strategic location of the "Eastern freight corridor". This is because Varanasi is located at the focal point of waterways, eastern dedicated freight corridors and National Highway 2 and 7.
